life in-during
Rosa rugosas are vigorous, highly fragrant and particularly thorny roses with very rugose (wrinkled) leaves. “Blanc Double de Coubert”, a rugosa from France, is an elegant semi-double snow white. Its thorny canes topped with fragrant, white blooms are taking over my garden. Cutting the spiny stems and transporting them to my studio (as visual models) required coordination, gloves, and band-aids. Rugosa’s flowers and thorns seem an appropriate metaphor for life in a world at war. Life comes with fragrance and thorns. Classic crayon drawing on aluminum and stone, hand-printed in warm gray and black ink onto Arches cotton cover in an edition of 40, each 11 x 15 inches. (The roman numeral edition of 9 in burgundy is sold out.)
