shadows trees and light

shadows trees and light
I painted this watercolor on day six of fifty days of painting in spring 2018. Here are thoughts quoted from my painting log. "Yesterday, I painted striking light and shadows through oaks along the Chehalis Western Trail where I walk almost daily. Today I painted the same scene, but with a new approach. Painting by natural light, I sketched only a few compositional lines quickly in pencil, and created the rest with my brush, with a wet-in-wet underpainting. The result is more warmth, misty atmosphere, less contrast and less total value range (slightly higher key), more lively colors, simplified shapes, less visible brushwork because of working wet into wet, nice lost (soft) edges and a few found edges. Also there is less contrast in the shadow areas. So in this newer version, the road shape emerges as more visible than in the previous painting where it was broken up by many shadows." Qor paints on Canson 140 lb (330g) 9 x 12 inch paper. With an unpainted white border, the image area is approximately 8 x 11. Artwork is sold unframed. Artwork is signed at right bottom.
